Chapter 9

The luncheon, of course, ended up running into the evening but Maya didn’t mind as much as she thought she would. Other than some awkward conversations with a few other aunts and uncles, most of her family were welcoming. Of course, the main person she was seeking approval from had not yet arrived. She sat on the front porch and remembered her days daydreaming there during the summer. Anais was hanging out with her cousin Sergio and some of his friends. She was having a good time so she let her go off without her.

“Oh my God, Maya.” Her cousin Gretchen ran over and gave her a hug. “I didn’t know you were here. I was at the hall most of the day decorating. Your mom mentioned you would be coming but I wasn’t sure. I know you don’t really do these family gatherings.”

“I was wondering where you were. Yeah, I decided to come, Nana only turns 90 once.”

“That is very true. How are you? I heard through the grapevine that you’re engaged.”

“Yes, I am. Anais is around here somewhere, she got into a debate with Sergio about something and wandered off. Anyway, I hear you’re a real adult and everything. Have your own accounting firm, own a home.”

Gretchen laughed. “Yeah, things have been great. I live in North Carolina, love it there. I try to come and visit when I can. I have to say that I’m sorry you and I lost touch, we used to be so close.”

“I know. Since I’ve been back I’m realizing just how much I miss everyone. I let certain things keep me away.”

“I know, it happens, but you’re here now. Listen, some of us are going to hit up a local bar in a few. Do you two want to come with us and have some fun like we used to?”

Maya’s thoughts went their night of drinking the previous evening but said yes anyway. They exchanged numbers and Gretchen went to say hi to some more family members. Maya decided to look for Anais and was headed inside the house when she heard her name again. This time it was the deep baritone of her father.

“Hello, Maya.”

Her heart stopped for a moment. Even though she had been expecting him all day, she suddenly felt unprepared. She turned and watched as he walked up the driveway with her stepmother. Although they talked every now and then, it had been a few years since they saw each other in person. Cecil Banks was still as tall and fit as he had always been but his hair was finally going gray. His dark brown skin still held a youthful glow and belied his 70 years. She glanced over at her stepmother, Linda. She was a small woman and seemed to have gotten even smaller. Her hair was near white and her face looked tired. Maya wasn’t surprised that she looked older than her dad, he was like an energy vampire.

“Hey dad, hi Linda, how are you two?” Maya hugged them both.
